A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
